We all need a home. And even beyond that, we desire more than just the basics. We all want to experience a safe place that reflects the best of who we are.
For those of us with mental illness, having a place that feels like home is very important to our recovery. Having a decent living situation gives us a positive social status and we can put down roots and feel like we belong.
Home is our safe space. Here we get privacy where we can relax physically and emotionally. Home is the center of our own personal map of the world. Here we take care of daily needs and nourish, nurture and comfort ourselves.
By decorating and organizing our home, we express our individuality, our interests and our cultural and family identity through the things we have around us.
